“We Are Where We Are” track-by-track guide-- 3. What You Do

Often, when I teach intro philosophy, I have my students read Sartre. Existentialism is hardly flavor of the month in mainstream academic philosophy these days but one thing that remains pretty bracing is the simple idea that the meaning of your life is just what you choose, what you do. That's it. I don't think you necessarily have to embrace Sartre's wider view about us being cast adrift in a meaningless universe to appreciate the philosophical kick in the arse. It's something I'm trying to get better at keeping in mind.
