“We Are Where We Are” track-by-track guide-- 5. Good At Being a Girl
A few months before our daughter was born, my partner and I went to the Getty in L.A. and one of the things we saw was a collection (also a book) by the photographer Lauren Greenfield called “Girl Culture.” It showed, in a really powerful way, the extent to which girls were and are conditioned to consider themselves constantly “on display” and to judge their own worth and the worth of girls and women generally in terms of meeting conventional standards of appearance. This song grew out of my strong reaction to Greenfield's work, as well as my general opposition to gender-policing.
